We made this tool cake for father's day 2011. The cake was double chocolate with a chocolate mouse filling. All the decorations were made from marshmallow fondant. There was a little tear in the fondant, which we made the back of the cake (see picture 2).
We started making cakes last year when I decided I wanted to make my son's first birthday cake. I took the basic cake decorating class through Wiltons. Other than that I have learned through YouTube and trial and error. This blog is to document the progress of my families cake decorating skills. The letters ABCD come from the intials of each of our last names, kinda funny.

Box Cake Mistake
After seeing cakes in the shape of a box, we thought it wouldn't be too hard to make. In September 2010 we decided to try it ourselves without researching techniques. We were also practicing with making the bow, disaster. This is our first fondant cake that looked ugly but it still tasted great!

Fondant disaster
Yesterday we had to toss out our first batch of fondant.
Lessons learned:
1) Don't use older marshmallows
2) Use extra Crisco during dry summer months
3) Be careful with the mixer speeds (accidentally put faster speed and powdered sugar went everywhere)

We use the following recipe to make our marshmallow fondant. It tastes great and isn't too hard to make.

Yo Gabba Gabba Cake
This cake is my favorite so far! We made this in October 2010 for my son's 1st birthday. The colors came out great. Two layers were cherry chip cake and one layer was confetti cake. The filling was black cherry preserve. It was a lot of fun to make. We used marshmallow fondant for everything except the bottom borders.
3 Tier Baby Shower Cake (Jenny)
This is the first 3 tier cake that we put together. We started with two tiers and figured we might as well do 3. We made this in September 2010 for our friend Jenny's baby shower. This is the same colors and style to the first baby shower cake but with added layers. We also used chocolate ganache and strawberries for filling. It turned out nice but a little lopsided.

Baby Shower Cake (Ashley)
We made this cake for my coworker's baby shower (August 2010). We used marshmallow fondant for the cake and the bow. The bow was harder than I thought and I probably won't do it again. We made French Vanilla cake with chocolate ganache and strawberries in the middle. It was delicious!
Gorilla Cake
This is my first birthday cake. It was for my bff's son's 1st birthday Party (June 2010). I made this cake while I was taking the cake decorating class. I think it turned out better then expected. I used confetti cake with confetti frosting in the middle. Some people thought it was a little too sweet so next time I won't put the confetti frosting in the middle. I printed a picture of a gorilla and stenciled it on waxed paper. I used icing gel to then transfer it to the cake.
